LADIES' SECTION

2023 LADY CAPTAIN - MRS ANGELA BOXALL

I am delighted to be the Lady Captain at Hawkstone Park for 2023. I see this role as many things but primarily as an ambassador for the whole club. I always believe the more you put into something, the more you get out of it. So with that mantra in mind, I look forward to working with Club Captain Stephen, Senior Captain Barry and Junior Captain Ben, not only to promote the love of golf at Hawkstone Park Golf Club, but to also to raise funds to support our joint charity, The Severn Hospice.

Formerly a keen hockey player, I switched to playing golf over twenty years ago. Living on the outskirts of the flat Cambridgeshire Fens, I was originally a member of Peterborough Milton Golf Club. Early retirement, from a career in teaching, also brought about a family relocation to Shropshire, where sloping fairways certainly gave a new dimension to my already mentally frustrating game of golf!

Arriving in Shropshire, I tried out a few different golf courses but once I had played at Hawkstone Park I knew it was the club for me. The active Ladies Section and the bonus of two wonderful 18 hole courses made it an easy decision to sign up for membership. I have not looked back since, playing regularly in ladies competitions, the handicap league, mixed matches and of course joining in with the many social events.

When not on the golf course you may find me with my husband Roger, trekking up the Shropshire Hills or even exploring the beautiful scenery further afield in a little white TR5 sports car. Failing that, I’ll be tending my garden or sat beavering away behind my sewing machine. Always on the go doing something!

How would I describe myself in three words? Approachable, Supportive, Competitive ...

WHAT A CRACKER!

The Ladies enjoyed a Christmas Cracker competition on 7th December, playing an 11 hole Texas Scramble. It was great to be back on the course and there were some impressive scores.

LADIES LESSONS

Over the past 6 weeks Golf Professional and Director of Golf Lewis Baker has run a series of ladies lessons for lady members and non-members of all abilities. They have been very well received and supported and were informative as well as fun.

Starting on the range he took us through the bag working on iron and wood shots, then to the chipping and putting, bunkers and the final 2 sessions on the course.

HPGC has the Women in Golf Charter and we are dedicated to promoting golf to women, girls and families so please approach us if you are interested.

Lewis is now re-starting his junior lessons on a Saturday morning.

MATCHES

Matches organised by the County include scratch and handicap teams. We also play other local clubs in friendly matches, both ladies and mixed teams. Within our own club, the ladies play the Senior men and this is always a fun event. We also enter some National competitions which can test your golfing ability. There is certainly enough golf to keep you busy here at Hawkstone!

COMPETITIONS

Here at Hawkstone our Ladies Section has a very active, competitive and friendly playing membership both during the week and at weekends. Weekly competitions are held on Mondays with an alternate day of either Saturday or Sunday. Throughout the winter months, we hold weekly competitions with a more 'fun' element, playing Texas Scramble, Greensome and general roll ups. This helps maintain your swing over the winter and also still meeting lady members for an informal round. From April to October you can participate in a monthly Medal and Stableford competition. Trophy competitions are played on a Monday, with an alternate day at the weekend. Our Honours Board Trophies are presented at the Club's Annual Prize Presentation evening at the end of November.

Lady Captains Day is held in June and is one of the most popular days in our playing calendar which includes 18 holes of golf and a dinner and prize presentation in the evening. There are two Opens in May, a Ladies Texas Scramble and a Mixed Team Stableford. We also hold a Mixed Team Texas Scramble in September. Our Ladies Invitation Day is at the beginning of August and is also a popular event.

At Hawkstone we pride ourselves on having a very good relationship with the Mens section and make sure that there are lots of mixed events planned for all to join in with.
