Captain’ ‘Drive-In’
Hawkstone’s Captain for 2010 is Don Lloyd who together with
Seniors’ Captain David Oldfield and Junior Captain Tom Young
drove into office on Sunday 07 February.
Don, who lives at Stoke Heath near Market Drayton and plays off a
handicap of 20, started his golf at Welshpool at the age of 21 and
carried on playing wherever he worked - namely Paisley in Scotland,
Woodlands in Kent and Lutterworth in Leicestershire before moving to
Shropshire in 1978 which is when he joined Hawkstone Park.
Originally only able to play on the Weston Course, he progressed on to
the Hawkstone Course after a couple of years. He began helping with the
juniors when son Mark joined the Club at the age of 8 in 1992 and he
became more involved on his retirement in 1997. Don was first elected on
to Management Committee in 2000 and has been Junior Organiser ever
since. Don is the third member of his family to serve the Club as
Captain - son Mark was Junior Captain in 2001 and wife Jane Lady Captain
in 2007.
Completing Hawkstone’s new team are vice President Richard
Jones-Roberts who was Captain in 1995 and vice Captain Tom Martin,
whose father was one of the syndicate of twelve who bought the Hawkstone
complex in 1966.

Hawkstone’s Lady Captains
Hawkstone’s
ladies section is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the
formation of the Club by appointing two of their most experienced past
captains as their joint Lady Captains for 2010.
Margaret
Hares
from Prees and Ann Trevor McCall from Hodnet both drove into
office on Sunday 03 January in cold and frosty conditions with
impressive displays of their driving skills. Margaret was previously
Lady Captain in 1973 – the year in which Hawkstone’s ladies first won
the handicap league. And Ann a member of that winning team has played in
all subsequent seven winning teams. But Ann’s golfing pedigree extends
much further! She was Lady Captain in 1975, awarded her County Colours
in 1976 and Captain of Shropshire Ladies in 1984 – 1985. Currently she
is a County Lady Vice-President having served as President in 2000 –
2002.
The Hawkstone course opened for play on 1st May 1920 when the
then owner Sir William Creswell Grey, a ship owner from West Hartlepool,
built the course at the request of the ladies in his family so they
could amuse themselves during his long absences from Shropshire!
